Course Reserves

All materials placed on reserve at the EDS Library are strictly for the non-commercial, educational use of faculty and enrolled students at the Episcopal Divinity School (EDS). For more information about Course Reserves, contact the EDS Library Access Services Librarian.

Copyright

In placing copyrighted materials on reserve, the Library is guided by the fair use provisions of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, Section 107.

The Library reserves the right not to place items on reserve if it judges that the nature, scope, or extent of the material exceeds the general guidelines of fair use. In such cases, the person initiating the reserve request must seek permission from the copyright holder to use the material.

Information for Students about Items on Reserve:

In the online catalog you can see:

  • what books or course packets are on reserve for a particular course;
  • whether the item you want is available or currently checked out;
  • the call number of the reserved item.
  • Click on the Reserve Desk link in the online catalog. This will bring up the Reserve Desk screen, featuring a "search for" box and three "lookup" choices: by Instructor, by Course Number, or by Course Name. Type just ONE of these – the instructor’s last name, the course number, or the course title – in the box, and then click on the appropriate button.

    Information for Faculty about Placing Items on Reserve:

    Submitting Requests

    To ensure that your reserve materials will be available when needed, please submit reserve requests no less than four weeks in advance of the start of your class(es) to the Access Services Librarian by email, on paper forms, or by submitting your syllabus to the Access Services Librarian clearly indicating which books should be placed on reserve. Make sure to include a complete and accurate bibliographic citation for each item.

    You may scan and post material to Blackboard. These items will be available to your class only through Blackboard and not through the library's Reserve system.

    Course Packets

    A course packet should be used if a large amount of reserve material is needed for a course and copyright restrictions requiring publishers' permissions apply. For information about developing Course Packets, contact the EDS Library Access Services Librarian.
