Study Carrel Policy

Carrel Assignment and Use

  • All enrolled EDS and WJST students are eligible to use a study carrel, but first priority is given on a first-come first-served basis until October 1st to EDS and WJST enrolled degree students who are writing a thesis or dissertation or studying for comprehensive examinations. After October 1st, remaining carrel spaces will be available on a first-come first-served basis for all other enrolled EDS and WJST students.
  • The refundable deposit fee for a carrel key is $25.
  • Library carrels are not offices. They are shared library study areas.
  • Due to high demand for carrels, two students will be assigned to each carrel and will work out their own scheduling arrangements.
  • The Library cannot accommodate requests for particular carrel locations, with the exception of cases in which accessibility may be a concern.
  • Carrels are assigned for a maximum of 9 months (September - May) at a time.
  • The possibility of using a carrel from June - August should be discussed with the Access Services Librarian.
  • Keys must be turned in no later than the end of spring semester.
  • Students who do not return their keys at the end of the spring semester forfeit the $25 deposit and will also be charged a $100 lock replacement fee. Unpaid fees could result in a hold on graduation or registration until all fees have been paid.
  • Students wishing to reserve carrel space together must attach their reservation forms and key deposits and submit them simultaneously.
  • The Library staff will routinely check the spaces, but the Library is not responsible for belongings left in carrels.
  • Library books kept in carrels must be checked out at the circulation desk first.
  • Carrels may be used only when the Library is open.
  • To reserve a carrel, please fill out the Study Carrel application form available at the Circulation Desk and submit it to the Access Services Librarian with the $25 refundable key deposit.

Safety, Security and Housekeeping

  • Smoking is not permitted in the carrels.
  • Storing food in carrels is not permitted.
  • Displaying decorations in or covering carrel door windows is not permitted.
  • Using adhesive that requires repairs when removed, nails or artist's gum on carrel walls is not permitted.
  • Electrical appliances that generate heat such as hot plates or space heaters are not permitted in the carrels and will be removed.
  • Laptops and small lamps are allowed.
  • Questions about whether a particular piece of equipment is permissible should be addressed to the Access Services Librarian.
  • Each carrel should have two chairs. Please do not remove chairs from other areas of the Library and bring them into a carrel.
  • Misuse of the study carrel may result in revocation of carrel privileges and the application of key-related penalties noted above.

Keep your personal belongings safe. Lock your carrel each time you leave it. Do not leave laptops or other valuables in open view when you are not in the carrel.
